There is not one bit of Italy that is incapable of growing grapes. Italy is the 2nd largest wine producing country in the world, just below France. Italy’s geographical characteristics make it ideal to grow every type of grape that the world has to offer. The fact that Italy is so long means wine growing can be grown from the Alps right down to the south end, within sight of Africa. Because Italy is a peninsula country with a long shore line on each side of the country, this creates costal climate growing wine regions. Also because Italy is full of high mountains, and hills, it provides many different altitudes, and types of soils and climate for all types of grape growing.

Italy hosts some of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. Etruscans and Greek settlers began producing wine in Italy before the Romans began developing there own more organised vineyards. When the Romans began making there vineyards they established a larger scale production and storage technique. Italy today is estimated to produce one-fifth of the worlds wine production.

Italian Red Wine

Italy’s red wine is some of the best red wine in the world. Italian red wine is generally full bodied and very dominant. This wine is the perfect to compliment Italy’s rich and wonderful food. In Italy over 60% of its wine grown and produced is red wine. Popular red wines from Italy are:-

Barolo

Chianti

Barbaresco

Bardolino

Brunello di Montalcino

Italian White Wine

Italy’s white wines are less popular than their neighbouring red wine companion. Italy’s white wines are less powerful than the red wines they tend to be more crisp, soft and acidic. These wines are also great with food, and Italy’s white wine is said to accompany food without overpower it. Italy’s white wine which is made from the worlds popular white wine grapes tends to be of a different taste. These wines tend to be richer when grown in Italy’s soils. Popular white wines from Italy are:-

Pinot Grigio

Soave

Gavi

Orvieto

Verdicchio

Arneis

Italian Chardonnay

Asti

The cultivation of grapes is called viticulture and it has been around for thousands of years. Often we think of winemaking as only available to the wealthy or those with some secret knowledge, but you can learn how to grow grapes right in your own backyard, and in fact, you can enjoy the same experience of being a wine maker right at home.

The best wines come from the best grapes, so learning the proper methods of growing grapes is the key to making a great tasting bottle of wine. There are many factors that affect the quality of the grapes, and therefore, the quality of the finished wine. It is a combination of grape vines, soil, weather, and care and maintenance…but when these variables are just right, the result can be magic.

Selecting the vine – Selecting the variety of grape vine that is suitable for your geographic location is paramount, your grape growing success is heavily influenced by selecting the variety of plant that thrives in your particular climate…not doing so can result in terrible results.

When selecting your vines you will also need to consider what type of wine you want to make. Will it be white wine or a nice merlot? Is the product only for the consumption of your friends and family or do you plan to sell the product in the marketplace? All of these need to be considerations that go into selecting your grape vines.

Climate and Geography – You obviously do not have any control over the weather, but climate is the single most important factor that influences the quality of your wine grapes. Not only can climate reduce the quality of the wine, severe weather can literally destroy a vineyard eliminating any wine production.

Choosing a Site for the Vineyard – If you are planning on growing grapes in your backyard you may be limited on the choice of site selection. But if you are planning on purchasing property for your vineyard or currently have a large piece of property that present different site options, then considering site selection is important. The type and makeup of the soil, the altitude of the property, the slope of the site, they angle of the sun, and the quality and availability of water are all considerations when selecting a site for a vineyard.

Ordering and planting grape stocks – The most suitable sources of grape stocks are nurseries that specialize in grape plants and grow the desired cultivars. It help to get the opinions of others, if you know of other grape growers in your area find out who they recommend. You will want to order your grape vines in plenty of time before planting. Giving the nursery at least 6 months notice is advisable.

These are some of the steps to learn how to grow grapes. Most people do not realize that so much goes into planting a vineyard, but actually, once you get the initial research and planning behind you the process is quite simple. You will not only learn a lot in the process, but the experience of tasting your first glass of wine…grown and made by your own hands, is as rewarding an experience as there is in life.

There are many facts about grapes you should know about if you should choose to grow your own grape vines. For starters, grapes possess one thing in common; it’s the manner that they grow. These delicious fruits love the sun. Furthermore, cultivars create the best tasting grapes once they are planted within the south slope of the garden. Planting grapes begin in the process of having grapevines that will give summer shade as well as permit winter sun to come into it.

Cultivating this fruit is easy and the easiest is the method of planting one. Grapes would normally sprout from cuttings which were obtained during dormant period. But even though grapes are not really finicky when it comes to soil composition or climate, it is still best if you plant them during early spring following the frost leaves on the ground and just before buds started to swell out.

Your grapes normally do not require any fertilization and you will find it quite unworkable if you wish to plant one too deep. If you can, it is a must to plant one in a pre-conditioned soil – which is a condition which is weeded, tilled, and composted – since this offers excellent drainage and this will also give the fruit a rich organic bed. You start by digging a hole, then make it wet, soak the root ball of the grape, then you are ready to plant it.

In case you wish to plant vines that are sold in a cardboard sleeve, it is no longer required of you to get rid of the container because it will simply rot in the soil. But it is important to leave the top of the sleeve over the soil’s surface. It is also necessary that you support the grapevines with the use of stakes. As an example, a garden pergola works a great support for the grapevines.

For every person who is planting grapes, there is a challenge laid on the table. This is one of the most important facts about grapes. They are known as a tough perennial that blossom after the second year of growth within the old wood during the first year. With this, during the first year that you grow grapes it is required of you to tend them with great patience. You may also train the vines to grow within the trellis. Aside from this, the second challenge in growing this sweet fruit is the act of confining. The moment when it is established, the grape would normally ramble and will then dominate the landscape especially if you failed to take care of them properly.

Above anything else, the most taxing part in the act of learning the process on how to cultivate grapes is the act of promoting pollination to ensure that the leafy vines will later on bear fruit. The blossoms will result to either male or female, and even though little cultivars will have to self-pollinate on their own, some of them will however need the assistance of bees in order to get the job going.

Planting grapes is simple but it requires a little dedication to do this. With enough determination, one can surely grow sweet tasting fruits that can be made into wine later on. If you choose to grow grapes for wine you need to understand that basically, in making wine at home, fermentation lasts for a couple of weeks. Depending upon the kind of wine a person wishes to do, the fermentation time and temperature can be adjusted. The higher the temperature is, the bigger the chance that the fermentation will acquire extra tannin and coloring out of the grapes. This is the reason why wines are better in quality when it involves longer wine making procedure. Keeping all these facts about grapes into consideration, I hope you see that it truly is not that difficult to grow grapes, and it can ultimately be rewarding.

How to grow grapes has been in our history dating back to almost the beginning of time. Every major country in the word has done some form of wine making, some better than others of course. If you learn the correct way of how to grow grapes and make wine then you will find it is well worth the time and effort it will take.

Before you had the idea to grow your own grapes, and to taste of the wine that it produced, you most likely never gave the whole process a thought. But now you have decided it is time. You want to be able to pick up a glass of your very own wine. The satisfaction that you will feel when you taste that first drop of wine that you made, is a driving force now. When you first learn how to grow grapes it is important to choose the right ones. There are two types of grapes that you can choose for your vineyard; the hardy hybrids and the European grape varieties.

Time-honored grape growing in areas like California most likely because of the growing season, use the European variety. Those people that live in an area with a short growing season would have to choose the hybrid grape to grow. Certain qualities are bred into the hybrid grape, such as; being able to grow in the cold and resistance to disease.

Grapes are perennial plants, which mean that it will take about three years before you can harvest from the grapevine. The most important part of the final product is in the grapevines themselves. This means that it is vital that you have a good growing site, with full access to sunlight and soil that is rich in nutrients. If you try to grow grapes in nutrient-poor soil, your vines will be stressed out dry and the grapes will lack fullness and be small.

An important factor to consider when you think of what type of grape to grow is whether you will want the result to be a white wine or a red wine.It is not quite as obvious as one would think. Most people believe, red grapes make red wine and green grapes make white wine. This is not always the truth of it; some red grapes can indeed make white wine. The skin of the grape is red and yet the inside is white and most wines are only made with the insides. So if you want a white wine do not use the skin. If you want a red wine then allow the fleshy inside to mix with the skin when it is being crushed. But this also means you cannot make a red wine from a green grape. White Zinfandel and most champagne are made with red grapes.

When you have waited, and the time for picking the grapes is finally at hand, remember that you can only pick and use grapes that are fully ripened and free of disease. If you have grown a hybrid grape then you should know that it is high in acidity and that you will need certain chemicals to bring the acidity level down to the right level before you can add the yeast. To ferment the grapes you add the yeast, there are many different kids so read up on them, as they will add certain flavor and characteristics to your wine. The process of fermentation takes about a week before it is ready to be aged. Aging can then take a few months to a few years depending. Once the wine is clear you can bottle it and again let it set for a few more months. It is a well known fact that the longer you allow your wine to age, the better it will be.

This process over time is well worth the effort. Once you learn how to grow grapes and get to the end with a bottle in your hand of your own signature wine, that is when your friends and family will sit and congratulate you for a job well done.

If you ask people about their preference in a sauna vs.a steam room, you will get different answers from different people and you will never be able to reach a final conclusion as many feel one or the other is best. Before going deep into the debate of sauna vs. steam room, it should be made clear that both of them are principally based upon the same property called hyperthermia, but the process to achieve this property is different in a sauna and a steam room. We use the Hyperthermia to mean nothing more than the temporary increase in the body temperature.

You need to know the ways to harvest grapes irrespective of whether you have raised them for commercial purposes and have numerous rows of grapes or grow in your backyard just as a hobby. You will definitely not want to harvest grapes before the sun has done its full work and ripened them enough or prune harvest with the wrong procedure and ruin your entire crop. You don’t have the option of restarting the whole process so you need to get it correct the first time itself.

These planters need only a little space. Now growing upside down tomatoes needn’t be a backbreaking and a nail biting activity. You won’t have to get yourself all dirty either. It doesn’t require too much space either. If you have even a small patio, balcony, and terrace or even a little bit of space, you can grow upside down tomatoes with an upside down planter. This idea may be too far fetched for you. But look on it practically as many people have done it and it works. What’s more, you get to enjoy up to 30 pounds of tomatoes per plant from these upside down planters.

For a healthy, productive crop of grapes, you must consider the source of the growth, the grape vine. The process of growing grape vines should be researched and considered very much to produce the best quality of grapes. Grape vine pruning is probably one of the most normally disregarded tasks on growing grapes and maintaining an effective backyard grape garden. Most new farmers do not really understand how important it is to perform pruning on grapevines. Pruning is done of grapevines to attain a better quality of fruits from their vines.

Some grape growing enthusiasts, with great substantial crops, often complain about the quality of wine grapes their grapevine normally produced. And they don’t know nor even have a simplest clue with regard to why their huge grape crop didn’t achieve to produce the quality of grapes they are looking for.

The reason for such frustration is nothing but simply the necessity of grape vine pruning.

As you can’t imagine it, pruning of grapes is a necessity particularly if you want to have a great tasting grape. If you don’t prune your vines, it will generate more grapes more than it can manage. As a result, the grapevine will not have all the energy it needs to mature all those fruits, thus the bunch of grapes will now have poor taste and will be useless later on.

The stems have a tendency to grow curved and are normally not sturdy enough to resist the winter season. You will need to understand the proper time to prune. In addition, pruning of grapevines is essential to manage the range of your grape yield. Typically, grapes vines grow to size big enough to wrap a whole space. And this doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be able to generate the best quality of grape fruits. In contrast, a correctly pruned grapevine will in due course provide you the most excellent grapes for eating, making wine or even selling.

Below is a list of quick grape vine growing tips that you can use as you start your grape vine pruning:

Determine when you will prune your vines. Knowing exactly the time of the year of when to carefully prune the vines can also help in attaining a good quality fruit. Remember that the best time to do this is during late winter or early spring. This will guarantee you of good fruit growth for the following year’s season.

Before you begin, you should asses the amount in pounds of a 1 year old wood and hold the amount of fruiting canes in each vine. Make sure you leave an equal amount of renewal goads as the shoots on these goads will be you primary grape grower on the next season.

The moment you are done pruning your grapevines, cut down entirely all the extra canes and by means of their weight, identify the number of shoots to leave on the vine, It is advisable to utilize the method of ‘balanced pruning’ or better called as the formula of ‘30 plus 10′. This formula means leaving 30 shoots on the first pound of eliminated canes afterward an added 10 buds for each other pound.

Keep in mind that your main objective in grape vine pruning is to control the size of your grape crop, enhance the quality of your grapes and normalize a manageable fruit growth. At first, pruning of grapevines can be a challenging task but correct grape vine pruning will definitely worth all your efforts the moment you see all your produced grapes are better than the usual, if you follow this basic guide to growing grape vines.

Do you Know What it Takes to Start Planting Your Very Own Grapes?

Planting and growing your grapes is the first milestone to complete in the process of making wine. In order to plan a recipe for success, take a look at the following aspects of growing that you will need to account for during the planting of your grapevines.

Consider Climatic Conditions Amongst the thousands of varieties of grapes that you will encounter, you’ll find that each different cultivar has been designed to grow in a specific environment. To pick the best type of grape to ensure a successful crop, you must determine what type of climate there is in your region, and what microclimate, if any, exists within your vineyard. Grape varieties fall in 3 main types: European cultivars, Hybrid cultivars and American cultivars. Both American and European cultivars follow similar growing conditions. These types of grapes are grown both in cold a warm climates, but they tend to thrive better in warmer, and drier, climatic conditions. Hybrids, on the other hand, are hardy grape varietals that can thrive in both humid and cold climates. This makes them highly tolerant of winter frost, and more resistant to pest infestation.

Set Up the Best Environment for your Grapevines Grape plants have their own rules to propagate efficiently. If you figure these rules out, you can obtain a plentiful and healthy harvest for years to come. Sunlight is the most important element in the development of wine grapes that have high concentrations of sugar. Grapes that are for making wine are characterized not only for a high level of sweetness, but also for a reduced size and slightly wrinkly texture. The grapes’ small size aids in sugar and flavor concentration, while the dehydrated skins offer higher levels of tannin, and overall wine coloration. In order to assist your grapes in developing these fundamental qualities, find the brightest spot in your vineyard that gets the most access to light, and for the longest period of time. Soil conditions in the vineyard require little efforts. A soil that is poor in nutrient content forces the vine becomes to stressed and in turn, to produce smaller fruit.

Harvest at the Peak of Flavor In order to determine how balanced sugar and acidity levels are in your fruit, use a hydrometer to test for specific gravity and potential alcohol. Different types of grapes and wine styles will have different specification on what the peak of flavor is, so checking these out in advance will give you a big advantage on how to select the best harvesting time. In order to determine if it’s time to harvest your grapevine, you will need to measure the acidity of the fruit in each vine. When harvesting, it is essential that you stabilize acidity levels before adding the yeast to ensure proper fermentation. You can find acidity measures and acidity stabilizing chemicals at your local winemaking supply store, as well as bottles, corks and wine fermenting yeast.
